Using the app on iPadPro 2018 with Apple Pencil 2, experience exactly what this user showed.

http://www.luckyclan.com/forum/index.php?topic=744.0

Why was it suggested that the user not use pencil.
Is the pencil tool broken, as in not-usable as designed due to bug, until further notice, or is there a way to get the non-hard smooth stroke?

When used, it is not by default working
Whereas, in the Traditional ArtStudio app on iOS, both hard & smooth pencil variants are working.

Thank you!

What he was trying to do is not what the pencil is for.  It really just a bad name for it(all art apps call it that) . The pencil is specifically for a painting without any transparency, and without it, it can not be soft   The brush tool uses the transparency so it can be soft.

For a smooth stroke though that is the spacing setting in brush settings.

Oh wait.  I see, the Pencil tool itself is the 'Unplugged' version of the Paint tool.
It is not actually a Pencil per say, but just an almost Demo-skeletal version of the 'Paint', which has all the FX active.

So, what you do is select 'Paint' select from the 'Group' which has all of the brushes, pencils and all.

LOL - that is very confusing and counter-intuitive.
It should be called "FX-off" and "FX-on", or something.
Just calling it Pencil and Paint makes you think it will be those type of art tools, not a nomenclature for brush mode.

So - Really you would always use Paint, because it is the Full-Brush mode...and it has everything...including Pencils!  ;D

Well the reason to use it is because it allows you to set the alpha channel absolutely. Otherwise you’d need to use the select tool.

When you need it, its incredibly usefull. But most of the time you dont need it. It is confusing, but every app ive seen calls it that. Its just convention now.

Pencil tool generates hard edge strokes, it is used mainly for pixelart images.

I agree 'Pencil' tool name is counter-intuitive. It will change soon...
