What do the dots and circles mean in the brush panel?

Does nobody know what these dot and circles mean? Or I’m I just missing the obvious?

From what I can tell, a solid dot will appear if you edit one of the built-in brushes' settings. And a hollow dot/circle always appears beside custom brushes that you've created or imported.
