Instructions/Tutorial for clipping/masking procedure?

I'm really baffled by trying to create a masking layer.   It 's probably intuitive for someone accustomed to it from say Photoshop but not for me.

Are there any instructions for this or any video tutorials by Lucky Clan or anyone?

I've seen it demonstrated in a few videos but not actually explained.

If you want to mask a layer, then press the + sign in the white square, next to the normal +. Select Add mask and choose reveal all. Paint with black to ‘erase’ and white to bring it back.
