Help / New user. Way to remove icon when using a tool since there is an offset?

After using Photoshop for so many years, I find the icon and the working point off-putting since there is an offset. Is there a way to remove the offset?
Also my paint brush tool only gives staight lines...horizontal, vertical or some other angle. It won't 'brush' like a paint brush.
