Help / Re: Reference info for blend modes
on: January 27, 2022, 04:35:08 AM
Here's a description of blending modes from A Certain Other Painting Program. It's as clear a description of the various processes as it's possible to be and it STILL isn't very.

You might keep this open in your browser and toggle between the explanation and an open artstudio file, trying each mode and comparing the effect with the description until it clicks for you.

FWIW, some of the terms - e.g., Burn and Dodge - come from photography developing and printing and, since that Certain Other Program was originally intended for photographers and printing production people, they kept the names that the intended audience was familiar with. So you could probably look at a book on photography and darkroom techniques and see what they used to be about IRL.

Hope this helps.

Help / Re: Files are grayed out in directory view
on: January 27, 2022, 04:15:27 AM
ADDENDUM:
Every folder that I open has the "Create Document" icon in the first position, which I don't recall ever seeing before when browsing files in the app, so I have to assume that its appearance there - and the fact that it's the only file icon that CAN be selected - has to be significant. Also, FWIW, the fact that the + sign on it is in the same orange as all of the top bar items.

If I select that and create a new file, as long as that file is open, I can use the regular File menu to open anything else. And, in fact, once I have ANY file open, I can open anything else, but if I close all files, I get kicked back to this screen, where before I would still be on the standard work area, with the File menu active.

A-a-a-a-a-a-a-and I just realized that I *CAN* open .artstudio files from here, but no other file format. Is it possible that this is actually a normal start screen that, somehow, I bypassed every other single time that I used the program before? Or is it something that normally stays hidden behind the scenes that I somehow got access to and can't put back?

I suppose that, as long as I *NEVER* close all files, I can get ASP to work the way that I'm used to, but it seems a pretty kludgey solution.

Help / Files are grayed out in directory view
on: January 25, 2022, 12:33:23 AM
Suddenly, the other day, all of the files in Artstudio Pro directory view became grayed out and unselectable on my iPad..

Folders can be selected and opened, but files - nothing. It was working fine, and then, mid- work session - BAM! - and I was locked out of my files.

I am using ASP 4.0, running on iPadOS 15.2.1.

HE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-ELP!!!

Hi, I had originally posted in the Help forum but no one seemed to have any suggestions on how to do this, so I thought that maybe it's a request for a later release. If this sort of crossposting is inappropriate the,Mods, please delete this thread.

What I would like to be able to do is to work in LAB color pace and, more specifically, in individual channels in that space. LAB has three channels: L = Lightness - essentially the black/white values, A = Red/Green Values, and B = Blue/Yellow Values. The catch is that the L channel is where we see the bulk of the fine detail in an image. Being able to separate that from the underlying color distributions means you can fiddle with your colors and leave the light/dark values intact, or vice versa.

As an example, I have some printed artwork that was scanned in such a way that the halftone dots of the 4-color printed page and the scan resolution create a moire effect. Back when I was working in PShop, I could set the colorspace to LAB and put a slight blur filter onto JUST the A or B (color) channels, without blurring the L (lightness) channel. This would fuzz the colors to smooth out the moire effect, but leave light/dark values (the fine detail) unchanged. It's an incredibly useful hack - in fact, working in LAB space is useful for a LOT of purposes and it would be great to, somehow, be able to work in it. (Hint : It's also MUCH better for color-shifting an object - Like if you have a picture of a blue sportscar and the client decides that they want it to match the red in the corporate logo!)

Seriously, if this isn't available in ASP right now, it really should be.

Thanks!

Help / Possible to operate on only one color Channel?
on: December 04, 2021, 06:19:43 PM
Hi, all - I'm fairly new to ASP and I was wondering if there s a way to, say, use a filter on a single color channel.

This would fuzz the colors to smooth out the moire effect, but leave light/dark values (where we see most of the detail in a picture) unchanged. It's an incredibly useful hack - in fact, working in LAB space is useful for a LOT of purposes and it would be great to, somehow, be able to work in it.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
