dithering as a filter or adjustment?

ive realized recently that the reason im often not pleased with the way threshold creates black and white is that i expect it to dither! is dithering something that can be added?

sorry, to clarify, by dithering i mean processing pixel brightness as dot density. this site (https://endtimes.dev/why-you-should-dither-images/) explains it much better than i ever could, mostly because i dont understand the computing process behind it whatsoever.
