Alt key equivalent
on: February 17, 2018, 03:52:48 PM
I know it's an old and tired topic, but I'm just interested to know why mobile device artists (and developers consequently) prefer all those double and triple taps, tap-and-hold and other finger acrobatics of a performing piano player to a simple programmable ALT key. There are SO MANY THINGS can be solved by having it somewhere in the bottom left corner. Turning a brush into eyedropper or eraser, or smear brush would be the most obvious choices for those who work with two hands. Not very useful if you hold your iPad in your other hand though, but you can sure lay it down on your lap or afford a $20 mini stand. Haven't seen any app developer using it. Except, perhaps, for the Paintstorm. A powerful app, with interesting UI ideas, that, like many others, disappeared into the bug-infested heap.

Here is my opinion:
1. double/tripple/long/2-finger/3-fonger tap gesture can be performed with one hand (for ALT in many cases you would have to use both hands)
2. it would be problem with accidental tapping of alt-key, for example when painting
3. gestures are used in many apps, including system apps, so all users already know them and don't have to learn.

1. Most people most the time use both hands while doing it digitally.
2. If one is affraid to accidently touch it, it can be removed. Nobody is painting in the bottom low corner without moving it to the center.
3. We already use enough gestures. Zoom and rotate are crucial, the rest are not.

I really like the idea. In fact, procreate have the idea for the eye-dropper feature. There is a (virtual) button that I can press and hold, and then the apple pencil temporarily becomes an eyedropper. When I release the button, it turns back to the brush. I think it is essentially like the Alt key in a keyboard. But it is so much easier to use than things like long pressing, etc. Especially if you often paint and mix by sampling nearby colors.

Really hope artstudio pro could have this kind of feature.

Alt virtual button is planned for the future release.
But version 2.1 will introduce something differrent - you will be able to set specific action for finger when Apple Pencil is connected. Available actions will be: Eyedropper, Eraser, Smudge and Quick Menu. For example Pencil will paint and finger will erase or sample color.

Is this in the Beta version of 2.1 now. If so, how does it work? I find having to click the eyedropper and then click the brush each time I want to sample the color a pain.

2.1 dows not add this.

To sample a color you can use long press gesture.

Ok, I was trying to do a long gesture with the pencil. Duh....use the finger. Thanks for the feedback.

This looks like another problem with the Beta version. I have a layer with a picture on it. The above layer I am drawing on. When on the top layer, I attempt to sample the color in the pic layer below and the color picker does not work. I have to select the pic layer to sample the color and then go back and select the top layer again.
I should be able to sample the picture layer with the color picker from any layer above that picture layer.

I guess I'm getting too old. Figured this one out. Had the color picker set for current layer only and not all layers. Life is fun!
