Help / How to make a dual color brush?
on: July 16, 2021, 05:40:08 PM
Clip Studio Paint has this feature which allows you to select a different color that gets activated when you use a brush whenever you use the Apple Pencil with a soft touch…triggering the different color while if you press harder…it uses the default color for that brush. How do I make this in ASP? The Borodante Air brush comes close to this but I’d like the Borodante Air brush to instead allow me to choose a separate color when I use the brush softly. Can this be done in the current release of ASP?

Right now ASP has this menu stuck on the top which takes up a lot of interface space away from the canvas. You have to click the bar to get to items like File, Edit, etc. That’s too boring and not very real estate efficient. Procreate is a lot more creative in this regard. Instead of menus plopped on the top everything gets housed in small icons which saves a lot of space for the canvas space. ASP needs to do something similar. My idea is borrowed from Concepts which has a unique way showing the color bar. If you open the color bar…it shows a wheel that’s scrollable. In that wheel there’s a listing of menu items that shows everything you need right on the circle…including the color wheel. ASP could do the same thing…condense everything into two floating detachable circles that you can place anywhere on the screen. One circle has all the interface items you currently have on the boring strip on the top. And it’s in a circle that’s floatable. You click the circle and out opens the menu items. The other circle has the color wheel with all the RGB colors and color swatches. Hey Lucky Clan I think Borodante would find this idea pretty cool. So anybody wanna jump right into this thread and comment?

I still have to estimate the number of layers based on canvas sizes in Procreate because at least in that app I can clearly see how many layers I’ll get. I punch in the dpi per inch and canvas size and I instantly see the number of layers I can work with. In ASP…no such luck. The information menu just gives a grab bag of info on the document without telling me what I need to know…the exact number of layers I can use in the app based on dpi and canvas size. This needs to be addressed.

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Zoom history states. Idea.
on: July 14, 2021, 12:51:00 PM
This allows users to set up a zoom state for images that gets saved in memory so the next time you need to "zoom" out or in...you can select from the zoom states saved and ASP can go immediately to that zoom state. I can't believe this hasn't been implemented.

35
I’m surprised this hasn’t been implemented. But it gets tiring to open ASP and manually create a document with your personal specifications for that document. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an option in ASP that automatically does this for you? All you need to do is open ASP and it instantly opens a blank document with your template requirements for file size, DPI, and color profile. The question I’d like to see answered is why ASP hasn’t implemented this simple idea.

This idea is borrowed from CorelDraw (Sorry Lucky Clan. There ARE tools implemented better in other apps out there. So I’m offering suggestions here to see if you’re willing to look into this.)

In CorelDraw, when you select a color swatch and long press on the square a popout shows a list of all the gradients from that color allowing you to quickly choose the exact shade of the color to select. This makes it super convenient to select color tints without needing to manually locate the color on the color wheel. In this way you could always get the exact shade when choosing a color. Ask Borodante. Even he’d confirm this is correct. And yes, if you implement this he’ll do a happy dance.

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Multi instance support.

C’mon Lucky Clan…do it. Let ASP get the ability to open side by side on the iPad. Just one more way you’d be ahead of Procreate. Borodante would get to do another happy dance and that’s good, right?

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / A Continuous Line tool
on: July 09, 2021, 05:36:34 PM
A continuous line tool is a combination of the bucket fill tool and the lasso tool. You select a color, any color and after selecting the Continuous Line tool…you draw an object that autofills the contours of the line you’re drawing in realtime. This allows the user to quickly fill large areas while masking out protected areas from being filled with color. This is the one tool that ASP is currently missing and I think this tool needs to be implemented very soon. ASP would definitely be way ahead of Procreate if this gets implemented. Please look into this one. It’s definitely something that needs to be done. This is sometimes called the Paint Roller tool, or the Solid Fill Line tool. However you name it this tool is definitely something ASP needs to have in its arsenal.

This idea is borrowed from the app Concepts which has a unique way of adding layers. There is an autolayer feature which is triggered by simply selecting a different tool to use. For example…if you select the paint brush ASP could automatically generate a layer corresponding to that tool selected. When switching to the wet paint tool or the smudge tool causes ASP to generate a new layer for that tool selected. The benefit of this becomes apparent because this allows the user to more easily select different layers without getting confused over which layer had the tool you used previously. This saves a lot of time. Please consider, Lucky Clan.

Now this would be an awesome addition to ASP. The ability to open up an infinite canvas like Concepts to create artwork in ASP. This would be insane. And it would get Procreate’s attention for sure.

Just noticed this now. If you change the wet paint and smudge properties to sample any other layer the tools don’t respond to the new properties. They only work for the current layer. When I try setting smudge to sample all layers…the tool freezes and doesn’t respond. When I reset the property to current layer the smudge tool responds correctly. This needs a fix asap.

In Procreate you can see both the color wheel and the swatches opened at the same time. This is very useful because when you generate a color swatch you can alter the shade of the color tint right away after choosing a color swatch. The color wheel immediately shows the location of the color tint allowing you to choose the exact shade to you want.

In ASP, you can only open the color swatches OR the color wheel. You can’t see both the color wheel and the swatches opened at the same time. For example, I can open the color swatch but can’t see the color wheel. In order to see the location of the color I choose I have to select the color swatch and then manually switch to the color wheel to see its location. I’m recommending ASP consider creating a combined color wheel with color swatch. This would be necessarily larger…much like Procreate. However I’m recommending this to be a separate option. The current setup is fine if you want to manage smaller windows for flexibility. But in order to get the ability to see the color swatch and the color wheel together would require a bigger panel and this should be a separate option. Not a replacement to the current setup in ASP.

Right now you can only edit brush settings from the Brush editor. But the issue is if you set up favorite brushes in the Favorites toolbar you can’t edit brushes directly from there. You have to open the Brush Editor separately. Opening the Brush Editor separately is fine. But I think if you go through the trouble of setting up your favorite brushes in the Favorites toolbar…it makes sense you should be able to edit the settings from there as well.

I just noticed when turning on rulers that you can’t set the point of origin. This is a critical feature when using ruler guides in ANY application worth its salt. You have to be able to set the point of origin in any situation that requires measurement and ASP doesn’t have it. Therefore it’s practically useless to use the ruler for any serious measuring. I’m also noticing you can’t change the ruler units of measure. Right now it’s set to millimeters. But you can’t use inches. Why the lack of converting line measurements and switching between units of measure?

When you start ASP you’re greeted with a blank black background. Wouldn’t it be neat if we could choose our own wallpaper for ASP backgrounds? So whenever you open ASP…you see your chosen wallpaper as the background when opening the app. I think this would be nice to have.
