It is totally Apple's thing. And I understand when devs are using this standard view. However, until Apple allows custom thumbnail scaling, an in-app gallery view that uses the same data, but a nicer / bigger representation would be very helpful. It is really about seeing bigger previews of all visible artworks. Column view makes thumbnails even smaller, which isn't what I am after :)

Now I wouldn't stop them, but looking at the results in CSP I am totally underwhelmed by their feature. The inferred geometry and thus shading just doesn't look good to me. Maybe it's the particular example of the girl's head. But the last image (interior) looks even worse, or rather wrong, with gradients all over the place that just don't belong there. I guess to make this work better the app could make use of ai models that better predict the actual geometry, and so can apply shading that is ... realistic, or rather convincing. This would, of course, defy the purpose of a drawing app and take away the fun of painting, illustrating and creating stylized images  ;)

It just struck me: the native iOS file view sucks, the icons are way too small. How about a gallery view, that basically uses the file system, but renders bigger preview thumbnails? This is not just aesthetics, I want to actually see something on the thumbnails. Since iOS won't let us change the thumbnail size, a custom solution would help - a lot.

Looking forward to this one. I hope it's a more general approach, meaning: I can use bezier splines for selections, as well as guiding curves for actual brush strokes. I like the results when a precise vecor guide is combined with manually controlled pressure.

I agree, an icon that is always better visible would improve the UI.

That would be nice! IMO Procreare has a great and simple solution with two handles, one being just to rotate (=pre-transform) the selection bounding box in order to better match the actual orientation of the selection. Whatever the solution, it would be a very useful addition to ASP.

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Suggestion: Bezier Guides
on: January 09, 2023, 06:57:38 AM
Hey there, imagine this:
Bezier bases guides. Can be anything from a straight line to a complicated closed curve. With an option for "parallel" (for open curves) and "concentric" (for closed curves).
Without this option checked, the brush just snaps to the guide as it is. When it is checked, You can draw anywhere, and the brush follows with the chosen offset. If Your guide is a line, You can draw parallel lines. If it is a curve, You get parallel curves. If the shape is an ellipse, or circle, You can draw concentric circles or ellipses. You get the idea :)

Such bezier guides could be their own layers, or attached to an already existing layer or group.

For e.g. precise mechanical shapes this would be a great addition.

Wht do You think?

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Re: ArtStudioPro Mac version

I don't own the iOS version, just the desktop, so I can't compare, but why do you think the desktop version is underwhelming?

Bob

This is mainly from an UI perspective. It seems less customisable than the iOS version - all palettes have more or less fixed positions. Or maybe I am missing a setting, still pretty new to the app. One of the selling points of ASP for me is to arrange my own workspace with the most used tools always easily accessible.

I guess I was expecting both versions to have a similar layout and UI elements to behave in a similar way. I prefer the same, or very similar layouts for desktop and iPad, so switching is seamless.

Since I liked the iOS version so much I also bought the desktop version. Which is a little underwhelming. However using the iOS version on the desktop works surprisingly well. Starting there and adding more functionality that makes sense desktopwise could be a way.

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Delay when switching tools
on: January 04, 2023, 07:32:37 PM
It takes half a second or so when switching tools, which is just a little too long. For keeping a good flow while drawing, it would be great to make tool switching more instant.

I am on an 4th gen iPadPro 13", latest iPadOS 16.

The customisable top row makes me so happy. Just a couple of minor tweaks I'd love to see: custom labels, preferably smaller text and also maybe button shapes? Even if the hit area may be the same, actually seeing button shapes makes me just a little more confident in hitting the right button.

E.g. the labels for "clear blending mode" and "clear (canvas or selection)" are "CLE" in both cases. With custom labels I could find another combination that makes sense and lets me tell them apart.

The lifetime license is a bargain for what You get. For me, this is an almost perfect app that is focused, yet very capable and also customisable. I have a big interest in further development and refinement, and the price that is asked seems more than OK.

Hey there, Marin here, Illustrator and Motion Designer based in Austria. A long time Procreate and Clip Studio user, who wasn't entirely happy with either on the iPad. Turns out, Artstudio Pro is just brilliant and has all the tools I need, all the customisation I want and feels like a modern app without quirks that just lets me work. I just got the permanent license and am not looking back.
