Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Re: App instability
on: May 20, 2023, 07:43:54 AM
This is actually a system error on Apples side that was introduced with the 16.4 iPadOS update.

I've been trying for the past month to solve this issue together with the developer via hundreds of emails and differnt approaches, but unfortunately there is just no way to fix this. It happens only on bigger documents.

In the recent Beta (that propably will soon be on AppStore) there will be error messages that pop up whenever this occurs, so you now at least to immediately copy layers to a different document and to restart the app, to avoid losing progress. Also changing the default saving location from "iCloud Drive" to "On my iPad" in ipad Settings > Artstudio Pro and to save new Files in Files > On my iPad > Artstudio Pro , can minimize how often it happens, and how much work you lose. It will also get rid of lags, incase you experience those as well (But only new files will be saved there, for existing files you need to move them manually). You can still upload the files to iCloud manually after you finished painting. Saving manually instead of autosave won't make a difference unfortunately.

The same kind of issue is also occurring in the Pages and Numbers app from apple. The only thing we can do is trying to make Apple aware of this bug... The ASP developer has opened a thread on Apple discussion, you can reply to and you could use the Apple feedback assistant to report this. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254870123

I know this is very annoying, I've also lost hours of work due to this becaue my documents are alway pretty big. But for now all we can do is to hope for Apple to fix it soon...

thanks for sharing! is the buttons on the joystick configurable for iPad if I may ask?

Well yes and no 😅 You have to the start the controller in "keyboard mode" and then all of it's buttons get a random letter assigned (you can't choose). But then you can assign those letters to specific shortcuts within the Artstudio Pro preferences

Now I wouldn't stop them, but looking at the results in CSP I am totally underwhelmed by their feature. The inferred geometry and thus shading just doesn't look good to me. Maybe it's the particular example of the girl's head. But the last image (interior) looks even worse, or rather wrong, with gradients all over the place that just don't belong there. I guess to make this work better the app could make use of ai models that better predict the actual geometry, and so can apply shading that is ... realistic, or rather convincing. This would, of course, defy the purpose of a drawing app and take away the fun of painting, illustrating and creating stylized images  ;)

Having exactly the same thoughts about this 😅

Thanks Sylwester!
I love gesture control of the size of the brush, but it would be amazing to keep joycon in my spare hand and switch between tools quicker!

You can give the "8bitdo zero 2" controller a try. It has a "keyboard mode" and thus it's currently the only controller that can work for drawing shortcuts on iPad (as far as I'm aware). It's also small enough to hold in one hand.

Been using it for over an year like that and love it. Really helps to speed up the overall process.😄

Please test new beta, it is now possible to just pick "Pigment" blending mode in Layers panel or in Tool panel.
But the most simple way is still just tapping "Pigment" button in Layers panel which turns on Pigment blending mode for both tool and layer.

Yes, thank you! It’s great now, for all different situations! 😊

Pigment is one of the layer blendings, so you cannot use it together with other layer blendings.

I think you meant to allow to use pigment tool blending with for example Color Dodge layer blending. Indeed, it is not possible now. We will consider to bring back Pigment blending to the list of tool blending modes…

Wait, I just realized that with the update, the option to add pigment blending to specific brushes was removed entirely?

That means now with the way it is set up, it’s not even possible to use the pigment option together with other layer blending modes, like color dodge/multiply/etc. and you have to turn it on for each layer individually… that makes no sense imo.

I agree that having just one button to turn it on is a good idea, but it should still be possible to then use other layer blending modes, multiple layers etc., together with the pigment option. Is there no way to make it globally that colors just behave like this, while keeping all other functionalities the same? Like Bob said, that it just “does it” when turning it on. I think a “global button” should then also be within the settings and not inside the layers panel.

Yes, that’s what I meant, that was one of the things I was most excited by, as it allows for very nice color variations while using benefits of other layer blending modes too. So it would make sense to bring it back as a tool blending mode, also so one could just use it with specific brushes/smudges only

Having to turn it on it for each individual layer, and not being able to use other layer blending modes with it, is very restrictive now

an easy and helpful way would be having a similar to current color panel open to pick the colors, so you can use your own swatches for the accents or the layers, but yeah, im super excited for this, hope its added, can see myself using it in every project :)

Yes agree, that would be amazing!😊

It's ready in new beta! Now you have to only tap "Pigment" button in Layers panel to start using pigment blending.

Hmm I just tested it, don’t think it’s the best way to got about it… It’d make more sense to keep it in the “layer blending” drop down than to dedicate a new button to it, or to keep it in the menu that opens when clicking on the layer.

Also, while it works on a single layer now, it’s still not really behaving like a layer blending mode. When turning the pigment option off again, it doesn’t change the painted strokes back to the “normal blending” only new strokes will then blend “normal”. It would be like using the color dodge layer blending mode, and then even when turning it off, it wouldn’t change back to “normal”. And when using a whole group, it also only affects new layers that are added and not the ones already in it. It’s all very confusing right now.

Maybe the easiest solution would be to remove it completely as a layer blending option, and only leave it as an option for the brushes? At least if it’s not possible to make it behave like all the other layer blending options right now.

Yes! +1 for color coding layers, it could be a great way to market the update "find your true colors" , or whatever! 😅

Like suggested in this thread

https://www.luckyclan.com/forum/index.php?topic=2757.msg7213#msg7213

For color coding layers it'd be great to have the option to select custom colors as well, which I believe they hinted at with the "..." icon behind the "standard" colors

12
Ah I see. Thanks for explaining! 😅 Yes I personally think it would be better with that change

13
But if I would then switch to a “Normal” layer or any other layer with a different layer blending mode than Pigment, will it then be turned off again in the tool settings automatically? And turn on again if I switch back to the pigment layer?

And besides that, is the “global pigment” option for all brushes, that I suggested above be a possible consideration?

14
Yes it would make more sense for it to behave like other layer blending modes

1. Pigment blending in Layers panel (not needed when you paint on opaque layer or you use a single layer for everything)

I see now. It works with 2 different layers set to “Pigment”. I think it would be good if it would also work on a single layer. So when the layer is set to Pigment, it blends everything on this layer with the pigment mode even when using a non-pigment brush. (In addition to it interacting with other pigment layers like it does currently)

Same applies to when changing the layer blending mode of a whole group to Pigment. You would except that all layers inside the group to behave accordingly, but that’s not the case right now.

3) Same files generally seems to have longer loading times to open them, than in the current AppStore version.

It fixed itself after restarting the iPad and App!
