Title: Annoying grainy look + flickerin with dodge tool not present in non-pro version
Post by: nicovize on November 24, 2018, 07:12:55 AM
hello,
I switched to ArtStudio Pro a few month ago. It is great !
However I found a problem with the dodge tool. When using a soft brush, it produces an unwanted grainy pattern, that didn't occur when using the same tool with the non-pro version.
When painting with it one can notice a sort of flickering, as the brush moves (this can be seen by zooming quite a lot), and the result becomes quite grainy.
Possibly, there is a precision problem with the color channels in the texture ?
Please see pic below for an example
Best regards,
Nico

I'm going to take a guess that this is due to the fact that APS is only an 8bit application.
Photoshop does a similar thing on an 8bit image, it leaves banding and noise around the stroke. On a 16bit image its a smooth gradient stroke.

This is exactly how it works. A little hint - buffer used to paint (both normal paint and dodge/burn/sponge) is 16 bit, so if you make one big stroke you will have the best quality. But if you paint the same using few individual stroke the quality will be much worse. I will try to improve that soon.

Little hint - forger Dodge and burn brushes. They are too crude for fine work most of the time. Use regular brush with Screen and Multiply blending. Set opacity and flow to 20%. You'll have to pick underlaying color though. Save them to favorites.
