Title: [Bug] Autosave crashes / file corruption
Post by: Blokfort on January 25, 2026, 09:55:10 PM
Since the new update, Autosaving from both the 1-5min timer, and 'save when closing file' have been very finicky.

I typically work in pretty big canvas sizes, so it's not really that much of a surprise for me, with canvases of 100+layers on canvas sizes of 2000x2000 300dpi to  5000x5000 300dpi. I'm aware that the iPad has a function to automatically close apps when they start to use too much memory.

That said, since the recent big iPad update, autosaving has become far more inconsistent in actually saving, and I've actually lost a canvas to this issue now. I recommend turning it off, as well as turning off >save when closing file, AND to save before you swap apps away from ASP. Swapping apps also seems to cause issues with saving, for whatever reason. So, here's a heads up.

Yeah, I just lost two big files, because of that autosave problem. Please fix it immediately, I can’t work with fear of losing all my progress (making art is my job) : /

To avoid this from happening again, you can close and reopen the document/ go to document browser/ manually save and restart the app/ duplicate the file regularly. Especially if you should get the "saving bug" error message, you should not only restart the app but also close and reopen the document to make it work again. It's only fully saved, once you see the thumbnail in the document browser updating to reflect your current canvas, and the Cloud syncing symbol is finished.

This bug has been around for years at this point and they mentioned a few times in the past that it's a system wide bug (also happening in Pages & Numbers). It happens more frequently, the bigger your document becomes.

I believe the only way for them to fix it reliably, other than hoping Apple will at some point (perhaps with the big "bug fix" update with iPadOS 27), is to switch back to custom gallery. Since it's somehow connected to the system document browser. That's at least what I was told in the past via email, not sure if anything changed since then. I really like the document browser, but I'd much prefer a custom gallery again, if it means reliable saving. They also did a poll about that a while back on X.

Version 3.2.21 was the last version with the gallery. I really liked this version of the app.

I ended up using a tool called ipatool to find and download this version on my Macbook, and then use Xcode to install it on my iPad.

I never really experienced other bugs in Art Studio Pro (I am sure they exist) but this file saving bug frustrated me so much that I stopped using it until recently when I realized that I could go back to the older version.
