Hi! I have a problem with the eyedropper option "current and below". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and it's notorious and really annoying. This IS NOT fault of the file - it occurs in every file I create. Eyedropper only uses the layers below and not the current one (which should be current AND below...?). I usually switch layers or "sample" in the options and it works again (not always...), but it really slows down my workflow (I used this option in Photoshop all the time and never had a problem). Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone have this problem as well? Or maybe knows a solution for it? I have work to do and now I'm just struggling with the settings, please help :( I attached a video of the problem.
-
Is it problem with picked color or with the "inside circle" preview?
-
Both. The wrong color shows up in the preview circle and that's the color it picks up too.
-
I cannot reproduce that. Could you prepare a simple document and video showing the issue?
-
Okay, here it is
-
I still cannot reproduce the bug. Could you write what were you doing before it started happening?
-
Well, I'm not sure... This has been happening since I freshly installed the app after the iPad (I'm using an iPad Pro 2020 12.9") reset, right from the beginning of using the app. I think since the 4.0 update...?
I backed up the brushes and reinstalled the app and.... still doesn't work. All I did was change the settings and upload the brushes. I am attaching the videos. I don't do anything specific before the error occurs, I just open the document, draw and there it is. Literally. I use iCloud storage. I guess eyedropper sometimes doesn't seem to update the changes on the layer in real time (only in "current and below", for me at least). But I have no idea why or what specifically causes it...
-
It works fine on my iPad, i was trying to reproduce it for 1 hour...
Could you send me the document you are working on now?
Could you also record a video showing all steps, from app launch, create new document, layers etc, to the moment when the bug appears?
-
Sure. This is the file I made and a video of creating a new document with the bug.
-
Everything looks good on the latest video.
-
Starting at 1:10 - the eyedropper catches the darker color that was there a while ago, but it's no longer here because I painted it over on the new layer. Is this the way it should be? The sampling mode is on "current and below" so if I'm on the top layer it should work as sampling "all". It's like eyedropper can't see the layer I'm on and samples the layers underneath.
-
In the latest video (New Project.mp4), I noticed something strange happened at exactly at 01:09. You made a stroke, then it disappeared, then appeared again. Did you undo/redo? Or maybe it was a palm rejection?
Could you record similar video, but please turn on Artstudio > Preferences > Interface > Visualize Touches > Enabled
-
I didn't undo anything. It was probably some compression artifact (I edited the file online to make it smaller otherwise it wouldn't be able to be uploaded here) because there is no such error in the uncompressed version. I'm uploading the original trimmed version.
-
PLease tell me what Drawing Mode (in Tool options panel) do you use - Freehand or Autoshape?
-
Currently freehand but I just changed to autoshape and the bug also occurs.
-
I have been trying to reproduce that for few hours, but everything looks ok...
Could you record one more video with "Visualize Touches" enabled?
-
One more question - do you paint with Apple Pencil and sample color with finger?
-
No, I only sample with apple pencil. I will make a video, but it will take me some time.
This is probably the easiest way to trigger it (for me at least):
1. setting the sampling mode to "current and below" (changing the sampling often fixes the bug, but it also occurs spontaneously during work)
2. restart the application
3. create a new document, a colored background layer (1) and a few strokes above on a new transparent layer (2)
4. create a new layer on top (3) and make a few strokes on it. Sometimes a 4th layer is needed. Eyedropper should catch colors from the layers below but not from the one you are currently drawing on.
-
I'm doing exactly the same steps...
Do you use version 4.0.5?
-
I believe so, I don't have any updates available. Here is the video, don't want to compress it so I uploaded it to google drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/105yX2Nd18w-o3MGDVYYmwY9lg_Ab8bis/view
-
You can tap Artstudio > About to check the version.
How about ipadOS - is it ipadOS 15.3?
-
Yes, it's version 4.0.5, and iPadOS 15.3.1
-
One last question - which iPad model do you use?
-
iPad Pro 12,9" (2020) 128GB Wi-Fi
-
I still cannot reproduce that.
Few idea/questions:
1. Do you rest your palm on screen when painting / sampling?
2. Can you close app, remove it from background and try again?
-
1) Yes, but I just checked and found that in both cases the wrong color is selected.
2) After restarting and auto-loading the file, the layer I was drawing on has updated colors and samples correctly BUT my next brush strokes are still no longer registered.
-
After many hours i reproduced that once, but after launching app again it is working fine...
-
Can you record one more video, but first close app, remove it from background, then start recording.
-
Could you show me a panel with Bucket Fill settings?
Does it also happen when you don't use Bucket Fill tool?
-
I tried it without the bucket fill and it broke down too. I just found out some bizzare things here... I recorded two videos.

The problem is it doesn't refresh its internal buffers when you sample color. So sometimes it uses buffer from previous image.
The problem is i cannot repeat that issue on my iPad. It happened only one in many hours of trying....
-
Ok, i finally learned how to repeat that!!! Thanks for you help!
Workaround - tap Eyedropper icon in the top toolbar to activate Eyedropper for a moment and it will start working fine (please confirm).
You have to activate Eyedropper after each app launch.
Fixed version will be released this week.
-
That's great, thank you.
Yes, activating the eyedropper and returning to drawing brush helps.
-
New version 4.0.7 is available to install! Please check if the bug is fixed.
-
Yes, I just checked and everything works flawlessly. Thank you for solving this issue quickly ^^
-
Great! Thanks.
