Feature Request: Transparency Shapes Layer Option
on: April 18, 2023, 10:03:38 PM
I'm not sure what all this entails so I understand if it's not easy to implement but just in case it's simple I thought I'd voice the desire for it.

When turning off the "Transparecy Shapes" layer setting in Photoshop I'm able to get a full value range using the Color Burn blending mode that simulates a burnt umber underpainting really well.

So I'm hoping there's a way we can get something similar in ArtStudio Pro. Thank you! Thank you for quickly fixing the hover bug too!

I usually fill my layer with pure black or pure 50% grey depending on the blending mode I used, before adding other colors, to simulate this effect. This would be hepful +1 ! ✨

I'd love more insight on how you achieve this! Because it's my favorite way to start a painting with how non-destructive it is but I haven't found a way to get something similar in Artstudio Pro.

Still hoping we get this feature! It's also very powerful when used in conjunction with other blending modes.

I create a layer with color dodge mode and fill it with black and then paint in the light with white with a speck of color (usually yellow or orange) 15-20% opacity. This could also be done paining on a color dodge layer using darker greys with a speck of color and is easier to merge without having to mask out the black fill in the layer.

Transparency shapes layer option is preferred though as it will simplify the process.

Import and export to psd will be more compatible when working with people using Photoshop with that option enabled on layers. Transparency shapes layer is widely used by many professional artists working in Photoshop and are dependent on it in their workflow. It should be a real advantage over other art software to implement in ASP.

It's true, it's one of the few things that pulls me back to Photoshop and keeps me from recommending ASP to other digital painters that I know use the feature. If added I'd be able to move my entire workflow over from PS.

I've already moved from Photoshop to ASP and Krita. Using transparency shapes layer with color dodge layer is the best way to, non destructive, create realistic lighting in the scene. The color transformation from saturated to pale light is almost identical to putting a normal light source in the scene. It takes a little practice though as it's easy to get carried away and overexpose the shit out of the painting. I guess that most of us using the technique do it now and then. It's like a deer looking in to a bright light getting paralyzed and we just can't stop adding the effect as it is so pleasing for the eye. ;D

Apologies for the late reply, I wasn't aware of your message

The workflow basically always starts with finding out what color wouldn't make any change within that Blending mode

for your case which is Color Burn, it would be pure white #FFFFFF
for Overlay, itu would be 50% Gray #808080
for Color Dodge, it would be pure black #000000

now once you find it, fill the entire layer with that color, and select the layer blending mode
afterwards, you start drawing within that layer, and you might notice that it would simulate the same effect as "transparency shapes layer"

I usually fill my layer with pure black or pure 50% grey depending on the blending mode I used, before adding other colors, to simulate this effect. This would be hepful +1 ! ✨
