halftone blend/layer mode perhaps

i think a halftone layermode would work similar to dissolve, but with uniform dots instead. it would be nice to be able to toggle if its bigger dots or more dense to represent darker bits.

Have you tried the halftone filter in Filters>Stylize>Halftone…

yes, but i want to be able to draw in the halftone filtermode. i can apply the filter, but any new stroke i make on that layer is in normal mode and i have to reapply the filter

Unfortunately there is no universal way to make halftone effect.
There can be hard/soft edge, distorted/not distorted, circular/squared a bit etc.
So this must stay as a filter, sorry.
