Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Beta 3.3
on: October 13, 2021, 04:18:47 PM
As for first look, it works without visible bugs.
In preferences in interface section cursor outline in 2 instances. Upper one doesn’t work, lower one works as it should.

Here my overall thoughts about beta.
1. Gallery is good. But I’d prefer color scheme in setting for gallery that doesn’t connect with app. I mean I use dark theme for app, and light theme for system interface.
2. Bulk export is good. Tested export of 10 files. Pretty long preparation (around 1 min), but exported all files correctly to jpeg.
3. Sample size in eyedropper works well. Quite helpful addition.
4. Guide layout is helpful thing too.
5. Export/import settings, I hope it also remembers quick menu and top toolbar (didn’t test it yet). Good addition.
6. 3 multitasking dots hiding from interface is a good solution, pencil doesn’t mess with it anymore.
7. Autoshape. I was waiting it the most. At the moment in my opinion it has two big flaws:
a) it uses 100% size and 100% flow which ruins main idea of autoshape. For example, I sketch with any pencil that has flow and size connected with pencil pressure. I just want to draw clean arc. All my lines are narrow and textured, but this arc is big fat like made with basic round brush. Shape should have same flow and size that was during drawing this shape.
b) you can’t move your shape after it created, you can only rotate/change size while you still hold your pencil on. That’s very limited. At least we need the option to move shape. Or better to operate with this shape with vector points.
Check Procreate, they have pretty good autoshape implementation.

It wotks.

Check settings -> pencil -> undo with finger

One more thing about panels. You have panels docked to right side. Then rotate device to vertical, then again to horizontal. And your panels would be docked not to the right side, but somewhere closer to the center. It would be good to have memorizable placement for horizontal/vertical ipad orientation.

And one more thing about brush modes: ellipse and rectangle. Angle of it is pinned to canvas orientation. So it is impossible to draw ellipse in one step. You have to draw ellipse in new layer, then transform/rotate ellipse to needed angle, then merge layers. To complicated. Why not rotate canvas and draw ellipse with needed angle in one iteration. Maybe this paragraph would be obsolete after quick shapes added.

I just put under these 3 dots two shortcuts that I don’t use. Other way it’s too many accidental touches of these f***g multitask dots)

Noisy airbrush can soften these gradients pretty well.

I guess it also depends on painting style.

If you use big airbrush, it eats ram massively. Right now I was adding kind of glow effects with airbrush and had short freezes while canvas dragging. Checked Artstudio -> Send Feedback: 1.8 ram was full and also swap was close to 1 gig.

I was curios and played with new document: 1 layer, small 2800x2000 canvas.

Airbrushing ate 750 mb on 20 undo step backs in Settings.
Airbrushing ate 1380 mb on 50 undo step backs in Settings.
Airbrushing ate all 1800 mb on 100 undo step backs in Settings. Also 750 mb in swap. App has freezes at this point.

Now, lets check 7500x5600, 1 layer.
Airbrushing ate all 1800 mb on 20 undo step backs in Settings. Also 150 mb in swap. Here are short freezes.
Airbrushing ate all 1800 mb on 50 undo step backs in Settings. Also 2300 mb in swap. Strong freezes.
Airbrushing ate all 1800 mb on 100 undo step backs in Settings. Also 4400 mb in swap. Very strong freezes.

But no crashes :)

And actually I can’t understand designers of Apple. Nobody will use these 3 dots. It’s much easier to multitask from bottom apps bar. The only reason in these 3 dots is to show non technical users that iPad has multitasking.

What else should be in 3.3? Quick Shapes?

Just curious, what is your undo steps number in Settings?

I found out that comfort number for me is 10. This number keeps memory usage in decent way. Higher numbers eat all free memory.

Activate the eye dropper tool and You can select the color you want and tap on the small plus icon on the bottom of the left toolbar to quickly add colors to the swatch. That’s 2 clicks just like in procreate and super easy/ fast, I create a big palette from a photo within a minute. Rearranging the colors is also possible by dragging them where you need them. And making palettes from photos automatically also works in ASP with more control than in procreate, I don’t know why you say it’s ridiculously slow, it works very well

I just discovered a new bug…and I was doing it after testing your description of how this works in ASP. Apparently you cannot reliably delete palettes after you create them. I found out that after I created a dummy palette that ASP refuses to delete the palette…UNTIL you close and then reopen ASP. Then you can delete the palette. This needs a fix. But I’m wondering if any of ASP’s developers are hearing any of this because we’re not getting any responses from them on the board. I don’t know what’s going on but there are bugs accumulating and being mentioned on the board that are not being picked up by the developers because they should at least be able to acknowledge what we’re noticing.

There are a lot of bugs in Procreate. Some of them is several years already. Procreate’s developers answer to users that they are aware of them, but bugs are still not fixed. Comparing to that, ASP developers are very responsive.

I guess summer, vacations and so on. Don't be so demanding :)

Why do you need crop it if you have ability to zoom in/out and drag?

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Re: Pinch to merge layers.
on: July 18, 2021, 04:59:14 AM
I actually do not like the pinch to merge layers feature in procreate. It makes what is a very common task difficult to discover because there is no UI element. It is also difficult to execute accurately, especially for two layers that are right next to each other --a common case-- since your fingers begin so close together and have no where to pinch.

Personally, I think adding this would be a misstep.

It even leads to accidental merge in Procreate sometimes.
