Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Collapsible Palettes
on: September 17, 2019, 11:03:42 AM
A Request.

So many things new, or different, in 2.3, I feel guilty suggesting something else…

Sideways collapsible Palettes. I hate to suggest pinching from them, but Infinite Painter does this so well…. (And maybe the sharing of ideas is how everyone develops).

Sideways-collapsible Layers Palette: (Optionally) always visible: Full width, Partial, Minimal - each easily accessible, switchable, and fully hidden if required.

And the same with the Brushes Palette, where editing can be done in either full width, or compact. And, again, having the Brush Editor optionally left visible and, importantly, still active while trying on the canvas different changes being made, is invaluable.

........

While on the subject of Brushes... I just can’t understand why edits should be discarded when changing brushes. Retain edits until a ‘Reset’ button is pressed: that seems logical (and something other Apps have, belatedly, realised!)
I know a brush can be duplicated, and changes made to that, but - if in a Default Group - a new Group is added, confusingly full of the same brushes as the original; plus, unless the name of any edited version is changed at the right time, they can appear as identical copies.

.......

I do have other comments I’d like to make, but will post separately. Don’t want to jumble things together.

I found this on the net which seems to be what you’re looking for...? I don’t use it myself, but hope it works for you.

Might be better posting on the Ideas section. LuckyClan seems to go there every day but here only once in a blue moon.

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Vanishing Layer Content
on: August 11, 2019, 08:19:46 AM

Make...
Layer 1 :  Paint ; Layer Alpha to Selection
Layer 2 above: Wet Paint - Sample current and Below; Paint

From then on….
Whichever of those two layers is active - and
i) wet paint brush is active tool and set to Current and Below
ii) Selection (existing or new) applies (whichever View state)
….then content on that Layer vanishes.
Still exists on Layer, but is not visible if any of these conditions apply.

Problem does not apply to exported .pdf, nor .artstudio sent to Desktop AsPro.

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Multiple Export (and Import)
on: August 10, 2019, 03:36:40 AM
Searching this Forum for multiple-file export solutions, i've read this is possible only to Cloud via Files App? Not good for me: any Cloud connection impossibly slow here.

I use the (free) FileBrowser App as my primary iOS file manager and find it solves this difficulty for me. (As with so many other tasks).

From Files App (ArtStudioPro folder) I can drag and drop - using SplitScreen - into any location in FileBrowser. The beauty of FileBrowser is that it can connect not just to other ‘on iPad’ folders, or to Cloud services, but directly, immediately, to any drive/folder on any Computer on the same wireless network.

This works both ways, and with other Apps as well - basically, making to-and-fro transfer of files, brushes etc, single or multiple, a really flexible and reliable procedure.

I thought maybe others might be interested…

Many thanks for getting back.
3) Yes, I think we’re talking about the same thing.
And apologies to whoever, cos I’m thinking now I remember someone’s suggested it before.

6
Thanks, yes I've done that - though I don't know why I needed to. Apart from me posting here I would not have known there was a later version. Strange.

Also, you did not mention my other points...?

7
Strange… I’m using the latest version as available to me, either in TestFlight or iOS Apps Update : 2.2 (362). (No toggle option). [i’ve found this happening before, that sometimes App updates can arrive here after others have received them].

1. Toggle between Marching Ants and Quick Mask would avoid need for 2 buttons. (Quick Menu).

2. New Selection visible… sorry I should have said Marching Ants, not Marquee? Scenario: I draw a selection; work within it; hide it (for clearer viewing); work more; delete selection. Later, draw Lasso selection, but none appears. I cannot see where it is - because Hidden Mode is still active. I can’t see why I would want a new drawn selection to be invisible? [I think ASPro is alone in this].

3. Editable Quick Mask… as in Photoshop etc: painting with white/grey/black visibly controls opacity of selection/mask. [I’m sure I remember you agreeing this would be good, when I suggested it a while ago].

8
A very welcome suggestion. Can it also be applied please to the Quick Menu? At the moment, a Hide Selection button there is ‘Live’ even when Selection has been hidden.

And if we could have a Selection Mode button in QuickMenu that could toggle between Marching Ants and QuickMask?

Also, about Selections:

a) It would be really helpful if the Selection (Marquee?) is always made visible when making new selection? (Over-riding the setting for any previous selection).
b) Also…A great feature would be to have QuickMask editable. (I think you said this was something planned when mentioned before?)

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Thanks and Suggestions - iPad
on: July 15, 2019, 05:07:18 AM

Another very impressive, feature-packed update. Many thanks.  (Only sad to think how many might join those perhaps already overlooked or unappreciated because of lack of documentation)?

A) Great to have light interface! Being greedy, any chance of a choice of greys?

B) Side panels (Layers, Colour etc) accessible as 3 states: Full width ; Minimised, essential use, width (as Painter,  Sketchbook) ; Hidden

C) Selection view : Always visible with new selection.

D) Mentioned before, I think, but so so useful: possible to have a second image open to be used as reference image or colour mixer.

E) Colour Palette. Too many Colour Mode Sliders open at once. More distracting than useful. (And not all show completely anyway). And did I read a colour wheel was on your to-do list?

F) Opacity/Flow sliders. I know you’ve said they can’t both be on bottom bar because of fitting smaller devices. My view: a) they do not need to be so wide - right half of Flow slider has minimal effect as does left half of brush size slider. b) The sliders in ‘More’ are narrower and work perfectly well - particularly with the numerics pop-up, which would allow the same fine settings as a slider of any width). (By the way, Photoshop’s of course are tiny by comparison).

G) A previous suggestion you might remember…. Impasto: you seemed to respond well to the idea in my post last year…

http://www.luckyclan.com/forum/index.php?topic=598.msg1571#msg1571

I wonder if it might be on the horizon? A standout feature I’d say. In more ways than one (Attached basic example made in ASP - but with difficulty!)…

Help / Re: Reference Layer

Ah, yes. Thanks for that Gregg. I see my mistake: was looking it as Reference Image not Reference Layer! Ageing brain...!

iPad - v.2.1 259 beta

I can’t yet see the difference between a Layer set as ‘Reference’ and a regular Layer.
What am I missing?

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Re: Brush Blend Modes
on: May 17, 2019, 03:48:20 AM
Yes, I do use Clipping Masks (and other workarounds) to protect blank areas when using Brush Blend modes.

My point is: why should we need to??

Whenever I ask why Brush Blend Modes work this way, the answer seems always to be "we do it this way because everybody else does it this way"...

No-one says we do it because it is the right way - the most useful, most logical way...

If someone can show me one example, one scenario, that wants a non-Normal Blend Mode to paint in Normal Mode on blank areas, then I will understand.

(( Apologies if I'm being a bore on this.  As I say, not directed at ASPro - just it's something that's always completely baffled me whichever App I use...! ))

Thanks for reply, Lucky (Do we call you Lucky - never really known)..?

No, I fully understand all about Layer Blend Modes - I was only mentioning them to illustrate my point about Brush Blend Modes behaving unsatisfactorily compared to them when strokes of non-Normal brush mode are applied to blank areas.

Referring to my 2nd image... (particularly the transparent background).... First the reds are painted using Normal Mode. Then (same layer) blue is painted, using the 3  (HSL) modes.
Over the Reds: perfect. That is just as we'd expect: the red being changed according to whichever mode the blue is using.

But... and this is my point.... why should those three modes (HSL in this example) act at all on areas of the layer that are blank (in this case, non-red-painted)??
If blank, then there is nothing for the (e.g) Hue Mode to change the Hue of..! Instead, on any blank area, the Active Mode is ignored and the stroke is painted as if in Normal mode!
I've never understood how that could possibly be considered desirable!

My thinking would be: (using Hue Mode, or any other non-normal)...as the brush paints:   if content present, change its Hue; if nothing, do nothing...

(Of course, as I said before, I know this is a universal thing, so not directing this at ASPro..! :)  Just wondered if you could point out what advantage there might be in how it currently works)..?

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Brush Blend Modes
on: May 09, 2019, 06:35:22 AM
Brush Blend Modes...

With every Art App I've ever known, I've never understood why Brush Blend Modes do not operate on content beneath in the same way as Layer Blend Modes - i.e. on content but not on blank areas?

Brush blend modes, as we all know, operate as shown below.

I cannot think of a single scenario where this makes sense. I find I am ever switching back and forth between one layer with normal mode and another (even more than one) with the mode I want to use, to change the colour or whatever of my existing, underlying mark.

I've asked about this in other Art forums but have never had a rational explanation - and yet no-one has pointed out what it is I'm not getting (as it seems I must be missing something)...

I wonder if you - or someone here - might be able to help me understand...?

(Sorry for slow response).

Thanks for all that info. ‘Packages’ etc too technical for me to fully understand, but still very interesting. (Not surprised to see IOS playing a part)!

One thing I found is that in Files App > My iPad > ArtStudio Pro, a new folder created there (top of page, or long-press on empty part of Files page) will, unlike with new folders of other Apps, show up in ArtStudio Pro itself.

Don’t know if this is already mentioned or known to other users, but I think it’s a really useful way to gather/Group documents within ArtStudio’s gallery - just as a sub-folder would be used elsewhere.

(Sorry if there’s a grouping/stacking method that I’ve not noticed)...
