Oh boy, I need to read the manual properly :D

Artstudio is great, so many options!! o/

2
Sure!

In the layer panel, the app shows the "Transparent Color" as a Dark gray. This fits well with the "Dark interface", but when we use the "Light theme" I believe the color representing the transparent color can be also a Light gray, not a Dark gray, to fit the theme. Same for the layer with a big "X", the background can be a Light gray too if we are using the "Light theme"

Besides anything else, is a little hard to read thumbnails with a dark background when we are doing outlines and only have black lines in the layer

Check the images I posted above in this thread with a draw of a smile. @alfanders photoshopped a simulation of what I mean, he makes the background of the layer a Light gray

No problems about the X, it's alright ;)

Regarding the "dark" thumbnail, it's on your to-do list to make it match the color theme?

4
Artstudio 4.1.2 fixed the visual bug in the "current color/previous color" by adding the outline - Cool!

Another small visual bug remains, the number 2 in the post below regarding the representation of a transparent color while we use the light theme

https://www.luckyclan.com/forum/index.php?topic=2957.0

By the way, I am not so sure about the big "X" representing an "empty layer", maybe a totally empty thumbnail will be cleaner - or even better, the good old checkerboard of white/gray (like we have in photoshop). The checkerboard makes it a little easier to see some combinations of colors too - like white interface, white brushstroke on white canvas - like "Layer 4" in the image below

Photoshop empty layer

Thanks for the fast updates and bug fixes o/

I support your suggestion for a toggle, so anyone can have the desired behavior from the UI. To be honest I should be asked for a toggle for this snap instead of a change - My mistake

As a designer, I fully understand how difficult is to accommodate the UI for every user. To me, the approach from Artstudio is the best one, they give us plenty of options instead of a rigid interface, so we can "shape" the UI for different workflows

I believe the ultimate goal can be total modularity, empty panels/toolbars where we can put tools, literally any tool. If we desire a panel with the color wheel on top and below it the layers, so be it - But I know this is not so simple to implement

The problem with the snap during the zoom is that the entire screen is updating, so it feels "abrupt" and visually similar to a laggy screen update, something that happens sometimes in less strong devices - If it was a slider snapping to a value, will be way less OCD inducing :)

And about snaps, I like them :) I asked about that 4 years ago ("Brush sizes in pixels + steps in slider") in a forum of another iPad art app

To me, Artstudio is better every day, growing fast and strong, with a superior brush engine, tools aimed at artists and graphics designers, customizable UI, and devs that are lightning fast! Amazing app o/

@LCArt The snap to 100% is still happening, but just happens after you release the gesture. I understand you are not seeing the visual feedback but this feedback makes the zoom looks janky, which triggers a lot of OCD too - Not to mention, the threshold is very tiny, about 5 degrees, which forces you to use very delicate gestures

An option to toggle the real-time snap could indeed be handy, so no one has OCDs ;)

But let's go further about your workflow, maybe you can benefit from the below suggestion. I guess you still want to zoom in sometimes, that's why you don't use the "Lock zoom" in the quick menu, right?

I have a suggestion for devs to maybe accommodate @LCArt workflow and similar ones, I will call it Suggestion 7 in this thread:

7 - Let the user specify the minimum zoom level and the maximum zoom level at preferences

In all examples below the user can pan as usual of course

Example A (the user can fully zoom in for details and zoom out too, but never below 100%)
Minimum zoom level: 100%
Maximum zoom level "max"

Example B (the user is unable to zoom in or out, the canvas is locked at 100% all the time)
Minimum zoom level: 100%
Maximum zoom level 100%

Example C (Can be useful if the user is doing pixel art)
Minimum zoom level: 3000%
maximum zoom level 2000%

Example D (The default zoom limits as they are right now)
Minimum zoom level: "min"
Maximum zoom level "max"

If the user is concerned about a precise zoom level, the already present panel in Artstudio / Preferences / Interface / Show Zoom info can be very useful

One small complication for devs: "Zoom to Fit", "Zoom to Fill", "Zoom 100%" and "Print Size" will need to comply with the limits - or be "ghosted" (disabled) if they "break the rules" of the user established threshold

By the way, another small suggestion to help those concerned about the zoom level:

8 - If Artstudio / Preferences / Interface / "Show Zoom info" is enabled when the user uses a gesture (or menu) to, let's say, Zoom to 100%, Zoom to Fit, or Zoom to Fill, I believe they need to see, for one second maybe, the "zoom info popup" to check the actual zoom level - again, only if "Show Zoom info" is enabled

The reason is this: Those options (like Zoom to 100%) are "reversible", meaning, if we are in 250% zoom and press "Zoom to 100%" we go to 100%, if we press "Zoom to 100%" again, we return to the previous zoom level (250%) - This feature is great! - But if the user is concerned about the exact zoom level, they may need a quick glimpse at the "Zoom info panel" to be sure where they are

Hi Lucky Clan,

just downloaded Artstudio 4.1.1, thanks for implementing my small suggestions o/

One tiny visual problem:

Maybe the indicator of "Current color/previous color" can have one small outline (like the one you used in the top toolbar) for clarity

If we use a color similar to or near the color of the interface, these rectangles can unintentionally "blend" or become somewhat difficult to see, check the screenshot to see how the white is barely visible using the light interface

@alfanders Interesting concept, looks like something between the full panel and a fully compact panel. Sketchbook manages to compact it even more (also, the first layer from the bottom is that "special background color" layer I mentioned in the first post)

Speaking of which, one additional suggestion, let me call it number 5:

Check the Sketchbook color strip, maybe if we can "resize" and "squeeze" the color wheel panel to be very narrow, the color wheel panel can become a strip like this, with the current/previous color on top instead of that circle? A color strip can be a good match for a "compact workflow"

@mattnava Oops about suggestion 3:

I looked only in the "Layer" menu and in the popup when we clicked on the layer thumbnail

I think the "clear" could be somewhere in this popup too since this is a useful tool - For people who don't want to use the drop-down menu or put it in a quick menu slot

Since the logic is already there, the suggestion for that "3 fingers swipe right and left" gesture to clear the layer remains, could be handy ;)

10
1 - What do you think of one "special layer" to define the color of the background?

Every new document already has 2 layers:
Layer 2 - The default selected layer
Layer1 - filled automatically with white

I know we can select the bottom layer, then click the bucket fill, then select the color, then click on the image to change the "background layer color", then click on another layer, then select another color, then click on the brush tool,  but that's a lot of steps to define a background color and keep drawing

Sketchbook, clip studio paint, and procreate, all of them have this "special layer" (which is converted into a regular flat layer when we export to psd for example). With one click on this special layer, the color wheel is opened and with another click, we define the color - Done. Aside from gains in speed and simplicity, maybe this "special layer" can use less memory compared to a regular layer pre-filled with color, allowing one extra layer in the iPad?

2 - Visual bug: When we use the light theme, the transparent color represented in the layer thumbnail background is too dark, maybe the color representing the "transparent" in the thumbnail can use the same tone of gray of the interface? A light gray thumbnail background when we use the light theme and a dark gray thumbnail background when we use the dark theme?

3 - We need an option to "clear" a layer, keeping the name, blending mode, and opacity, and just deleting everything inside the layer, it's faster than deleting the layer, creating another one, renaming it, and readjusting the blending mode/opacity. Maybe a "clear layer" option in the lateral menu, opened when we "click" the layer, or maybe a "clear" button when we swipe left the layer? Obviously, we need the "clear layer" in the drop-down layer menu as well, not to mention, the ability to put this "clear layer" in the quick menu too if someone needs it. Maybe this "clear layer" can be mapped to a special gesture too? That "3 fingers right and left gesture" in procreate is interesting

4 - We can use a switch in the layer panel to "compact" the layer panel (showing only big thumbnails) for a workflow where we don't need to see the names of the layers. All the advanced options like opacity, blending and the strip of icons at the base of the layer panel, can be accessed with a click on the thumbnail when we are in "compact mode". A "visibility" and a "lock" icon over the big thumbnail can be handy when we are in this compact mode (like the icons we have in the sketchbook layer stripe)

An option in Artstudio / Preferences / Interface to adjust the size of the layer thumbnail in the compact mode would be interesting. Since the "compact mode" is meant to be super clean and compact, a slider in the compact layer to define the thumbnail size would be against the concept

Or maybe, instead of changing the size of the layer thumbnail in compact mode using the preferences menu, we can do it visually, the thumbnails can increase in size while we are in compact mode if we can "stretch" the panel to the side, making the panel not only taller but wider too - maybe dragging from the corner of the panel?

Wow! Amazing! You guys are really fast!!

I liked the idea of making the rectangles that represent "current color" and "previous color" in different sizes

Can't wait to test the updated version!

Thanks @icezimy, my bad, I never noticed the caption of the popup "Enter title or SF SYMBOL NAME" :D

Just downloaded the free "SF Symbols Browser" on iPad. My toolbar is beautiful now - Scrap the number 6 request ;)

Hello,

4.1 is amazing, thanks!

Some bugs / visual bugs / suggestions:

1 - Visual bug/Lack of contrast: Put "Mirror" in one slot of the Quick Menu. Activate the mirror (now the caption of the slot shows a checkmark above the "Mirror" label). If you call the quick menu again and hover over the Mirror slot the font is gray instead of white. The gray font against the blue accent color (the default one) is very hard to read

2 - Suggestion/Clarity: Give us an option to fully hide the undo & redo icons - I know they disappear in full screen, but I like to see the toolbars and menus. I understand those "undo/redo" icons are there for accessibility reasons but, for people who only use gestures, these icons are redundant

3 - Bug/Unexpected interaction: Open "Artstudio - Preferences - Quick Menu". Click any slot to open the "Choose a function" menu. With this menu opened, double-tap the apple pencil. The app closes the file and returns to the gallery

4 - Visual bug/Unconventional position: Open the color wheel panel. The small rectangles at the top indicating the "Old / New Color" are reversed I believe? The ACTUAL color is displayed to the RIGHT of the OLD color, I believe the expected position is this: the ACTUAL color to be the LEFT one rectangle

5 - Visual bug/Distracting behavior: When we use the zoom, the canvas does an abrupt "snap" when we are near 100% zoom (clearly to indicate we are in the 100% scale), however, this makes the zoom operations appear "clunky" with these sudden snaps, it's better to "snap" AFTER the user release the fingers (as the canvas does in the rotation if the angle is below 5 degrees, it snaps to zero with a subtle animation). You can apply the same principle to the scale. For people who are very concerned about the exact level of zoom, you already have the "Show zoom info" option

These abrupt "snaps" detract from the high quality of your engine, and make it feel like it is "laggy" instead of "butter smooth"

...and now a not-so-small suggestion:

6 - Customization: Since we can customize Artstudio in a lot of ways (thank you so much for that!) how about letting us choose a personal icon for some actions we add to the top toolbar?

For proper control and consistency in aesthetics, I know the optimal way is a library of icons embedded in the app to choose from, but I am not asking you to create a gazillion of icons so we can choose from an internal library (since there are A LOT of tools and icons to create)

Maybe a restricted "import icon" that imports a png and converts it to the proper size and strips the colors to maintain a degree of visual consistency?

Since the icon size looks big (64x64 px maybe?) there is a lot of room to play. Maybe we can use Artstudio itself to create those PNGs since Artstudio has a great pixel grid! Anyway, this is just a deluxe option ;)

Thank you again for the update, Artstudio is better than ever!

1 - File - New - New empty - 2732x2048 144ppi
2 - Draw some lines
3 - Click the layers button - click the "trash can" to delete the layer
4 - Click the "plus sign" to add a layer
5 - Using the fingers, slowly pinch in to "zoom out" the canvas - You will see a "phantom image" of the previously deleted layer

Suggestions, Ideas, Bugs / Re: Version 2.0 Beta
on: September 30, 2018, 03:54:51 AM
Artstudio pro 1.4 (178) beta feedback

Some suggestions:

Allow us to use one finger swipes to open the quick menu. Using 4 finger to open it conflicts with the 4 finger gesture to multitask in ios 12 (the gesture to switch to another app or see all apps opened). One finger swipe up can open the quick menu and instantly activate the top quick menu button, one finger swipe right can open the quick menu and instantly activate the right quick menu button. Basically, like the quick menu in procreate, it's faster than "open the quick menu and click a button"

Allow us to put tools on the quick menu (like the pencil tool, eraser, brush) so we can switch tools super quickly (between pencil and eraser and back as an example). It's faster than "look at the toolbar, find the icon, and click", we can do a swipe with another hand and change tools while still looking at the drawing

Allow us to put brushes on any slot in the quick menu so we can access our most used brushes super quick, faster than "click on favorites, look for the brush and click it". One single swipe and done

Allow us to customize the "fullscreen interface", with icons for save, return to gallery, etc. There will be nice if we can choose to space out and group our icons in the fullscreen interface, putting "space separators" in the top toolbar too

Give us an option to show the color bar while we work in fullscreen

Remember the fullscreen state if we return to gallery and back to a drawing afterwards. If we can customize fully the "fullscreen interface" one artist will see all the tools he need and zero of the tools he never use (or doesn't use very often), Let the fullscreen interface be "our" plastic interface while the regular, non fullscreen, be the "default, full interface"

If you implement a "one finger swipe quick menu", a "four finger tap" can be a fast way to switch to the fullscreen interface and exit the fullscreen interface

Give us an option to remove the icon for "finger and pencil" in preferences, some drawings are always made with the apple pencil and there is no use for this icon in some projects, even worse, it's close to the layer icon, an important icon used more frequently

Give us an option to remove the "undo" and "redo" icons - If we are using the "two finger undo" and the "three finger redo" these icons are redundant on the screen

The zoom and rotate looks choppy because of the constant snap to 100% size and 0 degrees. Make the snap happen *after* we are no longer touching the screen, with a smootly animation,  snaping if we land very near 0 degrees as an example (like procreate do). This will make the canvas movement more suave and without hiccups

About layers, I guess we need a "automatic special background color layer" so we don't need to always create that "white+transparent" background that actually creates 2 layers, one beeing fully white to serve as a background to hide the checkerboard. I guess a "special" bottom layer (like the one in procreate) can solve this better and allow us to change the background color faster without the need to color fill the layer manually (no to mention: one less layer to manage)
